Invitation to join PAFN

All incoming students are invited to join Peer Advising Family Network (PAFN) for this upcoming academic year.

PAFN is a peer mentoring organization affiliated with the Office of the Dean of Students at the University of Virginia. Our goal is to help smooth the transition to college for incoming Asian and Asian-American students. We're one of the largest organizations at UVA and are often the first point of contact for many first year and transfer students. We hold many events, ranging from field day to dinners, and work to create a supportive network among all of our members.

If you decide to join, you will be placed into an advising family in early August, where we place you in a group of other incoming students, who act as your siblings, and provide your group with a pair of upperclassmen, who act as your mentors/parents. The advisor pair is here to aid you in academic decisions and introduce you to the University community and social scene. This will allow you to come to UVA with a built in support system and family network!

So how do you join? It's easy and will only take a few minutes!
  1. Flip through the following booklet (click here) that introduces all of the advising pairs and decide on your top three choices.
  2. Fill out the following questionnaire (click here) - indicate your top choices for advisors and answer the listed questions by Monday, July 22nd to be placed in a family before school starts.
If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to email us at We look forward to meeting all of you guys and can't wait to see you around Grounds this Fall!

Welcome to the PAFN Family!

We would like to congratulate all the new advisors for the 2013-2014 school year! Strong advisors are the backbone of PAFN and based on what we have been able to learn about you all through the interview process, we are confident that PAFN will be a much stronger organization this coming year.

What's Next?
If you haven't already, please join our 2013-2014 facebook group here. PAFN Exec Board will be holding an ice cream social on Thursday, March 21st from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm at Ern Commons where you’ll be able to meet other PAFN advisors and learn about what’s new with PAFN for next year! Feel free to stop by anytime!

There will be two training sessions this year:

Advisor Training, Part I: Saturday, March 23rd from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Newcomb Ballroom (Business Casual, Lunch will be provided)
Advisor Training, Part II: Sunday, April 7th from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Newcomb Ballroom (No Dress Code)

Part I will be a joint peer mentoring training session with the other peer advising organizations under the Dean of Students' Office. The session will consist of guest speakers and a resource workshop. Part II will be for PAFN only and will mainly focus on advisor bonding.

Between the 1st and 2nd training sessions, you will be provided a list consisting of 3-4 other advisors that you are encouraged to meet with. While not mandatory, it is in your best interest to get to know as many of your fellow advisors as possible because this year you will be able to influence who your co-advisor will be. Exec board will be sending out a co-advisor preference form after the 1st training session which we will use to help select the pairs.

If you have a time conflict with the training sessions, please let us know as soon as possible if you haven't already via Any questions, suggestions, or concerns should either be sent to or through the feedback page on this blog.

Looking forward to working with you all. Have a great spring break!
